Why and when do I need to replace my tyres?
Road legal tyres in the UK, must have a minimum tread depth of at least 1.6mm. Driving on tyres with a lesser tread depth than this is illegal. As per EU tyre regulations, all tyres in the UK must also have a tyre label attached with information about the tyre's performance in three critical areas:
- Fuel efficiency - The more fuel efficient your tyres, the less your C02 emissions and driving costs will be. Tyres are rated from A-G (A being the most fuel efficient, G being the least). Choosing A-rated tyres over G-rated tyres could reduce your fuel consumption by 75% (when measured according to the test methods set out in Regulations EC 1222/2009).
- Wet braking performance - Wet braking performance is critical to your road safety. Tyres are again rated A-G, with driving on A-rated tyres significantly improving your stopping distance in wet conditions.
- Exterior noise emission - The amount of noise made by a tyre when it rolls along the road surface. The ENE of a tyre is shown by a series of black waves on the tyre, with 3 black waves indicating the tyre produces the most amount of noise, and 1 being the least.
